A lobster confronts an agitated cat in a compact late-period scene that turns a domestic encounter into an unsettling drama. The animals' exaggerated forms and charged colors make fear, appetite, and aggression feel interchangeable: the lobster is food, threat, and comic intruder at once, while the cat's response is both instinctive and theatrical. Picasso uses the small-scale subject to demonstrate how an apparently playful anecdote can carry psychological force.
Dated 11 January 1965, Lobster and Cat belongs to the Guggenheim's Thannhauser Collection. The museum connects its premise to Jean-Baptiste-Siméon Chardin's The Ray and describes Picasso's transformation of an eighteenth-century genre motif into a more ambiguous image of fear and aggression. The work exemplifies the imaginative freedom of Picasso's final years, when familiar art-historical references could become direct, humorous, and disquieting at the same time.
