About This Work
This early bronze sculpture depicts a jester or harlequin figure wearing a three-cornered hat, his face rendered with a lively, expressive quality. The work shows the influence of Rodin in its modeled surface and its psychological intensity, while the subject — a circus performer — connects it to the Rose Period paintings. It is one of Picasso's earliest significant sculptures.
The Jester was modeled in 1905 and cast in bronze, making it one of Picasso's earliest sculptural works. It demonstrates that his interest in three-dimensional form was present from the very beginning of his career, long before his major sculptural innovations of the 1910s and 1920s.
