About This Work
Fernande Olivier reclines in a pose of relaxed abandon, her body rendered with the warm, simplified forms that characterize the transitional period between the Rose Period and the African period. The figure's sculptural solidity and the simplified treatment of the face already anticipate the more austere style of the following years, while the warm palette and the intimate subject retain the sensual warmth of the Rose Period.
Painted at Gósol in the summer of 1906, this nude is one of several works in which Picasso began to move away from the Rose Period's lyrical style toward the more geometric, sculptural approach that would lead to Les Demoiselles d'Avignon. The Art Institute of Chicago holds one of the finest collections of Picasso in the United States.
