About This Work
Two Acrobats with a Dog depicts two young circus performers — a boy and a girl — standing with a small dog in a desolate landscape. The figures are rendered in the warm pinks and ochres of the Rose Period, their poses suggesting both camaraderie and isolation. The dog looks up at the boy with an expression of loyal attention. The painting is one of the most intimate and tender works of the Rose Period.
Painted in 1905, Two Acrobats with a Dog belongs to the series of circus and saltimbanque works that Picasso made in his first years in Paris. The figures are thought to be based on performers from the Cirque Médrano, which Picasso frequented. The painting was acquired by MoMA in 1950.
