About This Work

Nude Under a Pine Tree depicts a monumental reclining female figure beneath the sweeping branches of a pine tree. The figure — Jacqueline — is rendered in Picasso's late style, her body a complex arrangement of interlocking curves and angles. The pine tree, a recurring motif in Picasso's late work, frames the figure with a quality of Mediterranean grandeur.

Painted at La Californie, Picasso's villa in Cannes, Nude Under a Pine Tree belongs to the series of large-scale figure paintings that Picasso made in the late 1950s. The pine trees of the Côte d'Azur were a constant presence in his late work, and this painting is one of the most ambitious of the series.
