About This Work

A standing nude fills the vertical canvas with unusual stillness. Picasso simplifies the body into long, continuous contours and suppresses conventional modeling, making the figure appear at once bodily and sculptural. The clasped hands draw attention to the center of the pose and counter the monumentality of the torso with a contained, introspective gesture. The restrained ground gives the figure an almost relief-like clarity, showing Picasso’s growing preference for structural mass over atmospheric detail.

MoMA dates Nude with Joined Hands to 1906 and records it as oil on canvas in the William S. Paley Collection. It belongs to Picasso’s pre-Cubist reassessment of the nude, when Iberian and archaic Mediterranean forms offered alternatives to academic naturalism. The work’s rigid frontal presence and compressed space forecast the experimental figure language of 1907 while remaining distinct from the later fragmentation of Cubism. Its meaning lies less in portraiture than in the transformation of the human body into an architectural, enduring form.
