The official Cleveland Museum of Art, Cleveland, Ohio record identifies Two Nude Women (A series of progressive proofs) as a Pablo Picasso artwork, dated 1945–46, in lithograph. Picasso printed each of these 10 lithographs from the same stone. This technique involves chemically sealing a drawing to the surface of a printing stone so that ink adheres to the design and the stone can be run through a printing press. Picasso edited and reprinted his stone as he transformed the image. The artist ultimately created 21 states, or variations, highlighting his fascination with what he described as the “metamorphosis” possible through printmaking. He experimented with realistic and abstract versions of the composition, which features women sitting and sleeping, while also adding and removing marginal images as he worked.
Two Nude Women (A series of progressive proofs) is grouped here under Late Period for gallery navigation based on the date published by Cleveland Museum of Art, Cleveland, Ohio. This period label is interpretive context, not a replacement for the cited primary object record. The holding collection is documented by the cited institutional source.
