About This Work
This preparatory study for the Weeping Woman series shows Picasso working through the visual language of grief with extraordinary intensity. The face is fragmented and distorted, the handkerchief pressed to the mouth, the tears rendered as sharp geometric fragments. The drawing demonstrates how Picasso used works on paper not merely as preparatory studies but as independent works of art in their own right.
Picasso produced dozens of studies for the Weeping Woman series in 1937, working through the imagery of grief and anguish that he had developed in Guernica. The series is associated with Dora Maar, his companion at the time, though Picasso insisted that the weeping woman was a universal symbol rather than a portrait.
