About This Work
This richly colored work on paper depicts a reclining nude in a red armchair, her body rendered in the voluptuous, biomorphic forms that characterize Picasso's Marie-Thérèse period. The figure's limbs flow into one another in dreamlike continuity, the face shown simultaneously in profile and full-face. The deep reds and warm flesh tones create an atmosphere of sensual warmth that contrasts with the angular distortions of the Cubist period.
Created in 1932, the year of Picasso's most intense creative engagement with Marie-Thérèse Walter, this work belongs to the extraordinary series of paintings and drawings that culminated in the Nude, Green Leaves and Bust.
