MoMA identifies Bathers in a Forest as a 1908 work on paper made with gouache, watercolor, and pencil. The mixed medium lets Picasso develop figures and landscape through layered, provisional marks, making the sheet a compact record of his early experiments with structure, contour, and spatial compression.
MoMA catalogues the work in its Drawings and Prints department as object 28.1957, acquired through the Hillman Periodicals Fund. Its provenance research records a possible acquisition by the Paul Rosenberg Gallery between 1931 and 1951, followed by Eleanor Rixson Cannon before MoMA purchased it in 1957. The museum licenses reproductions separately from collection access.
