This small, exquisite still life shows Picasso working in a near-classical style, with a pitcher and apples rendered with a simplicity and directness that recalls Chardin and Cézanne. The work is a demonstration of Picasso's extraordinary technical range — painted in the same year as his most elaborate Cubist works, it shows that he could move effortlessly between radically different visual languages.
The still life was a genre that Picasso returned to throughout his career, using it as a laboratory for formal experimentation. This Neoclassical example shows the influence of his renewed engagement with the French tradition of still life painting during the post-war Return to Order.
