About This Work

Fernande with a Black Mantilla portrays Fernande Olivier in a dark Spanish mantilla, using subdued tones and lively brushwork to hold together a naturalistic figure and an increasingly abbreviated treatment of the face. Guggenheim describes the work as a transitional portrait: its romantic and expressionistic qualities remain visible, while the simplified features point toward Picasso’s growing interest in abstract form and Iberian sculpture.

Guggenheim dates the work to Paris, ca. 1905, and records it as an oil on canvas measuring 100 × 81 cm. It entered the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum’s Thannhauser Collection through the bequest of Hilde Thannhauser in 1991 (accession 91.3914). This correction replaces an incorrect Philadelphia location, mismatched image, unsupported valuation, and generic attribution with the holding museum’s direct documentation.
