This monumental portrait of the influential American writer and art patron, Gertrude Stein, represents a pivotal moment in Picasso's artistic development, bridging his Rose Period with the nascent stages of Cubism. After an astonishing 90 sittings, Picasso famously painted over Stein's face, replacing it months later from memory with a mask-like, sculptural rendition. This radical departure from traditional portraiture, characterized by its simplified, almost geometric planes, anticipates his groundbreaking shift towards Cubism. Stein's legendary comment, 'in the end, I will manage to look just like it,' speaks to the prophetic nature of Picasso's vision.
Painted between 1905 and 1906, this portrait was a challenging endeavor for Picasso, who reportedly struggled to capture Stein's essence. The final, almost primitive facial features are a direct result of Picasso's exposure to ancient Iberian sculpture at the Louvre, which profoundly influenced his move away from naturalism. Gertrude Stein, along with her brother Leo, was a crucial early patron and collector of Picasso's work, providing him with financial support and intellectual camaraderie during his formative years in Paris. The portrait remained in her collection until her death in 1946, after which it was bequeathed to the Metropolitan Museum of Art, where it continues to be a cornerstone of modern art collections and a testament to the revolutionary artistic spirit of the early 20th century.
