About This Work
Part of Picasso's celebrated series of beach bather paintings from the late 1920s, this small canvas shows a biomorphic figure — all curves and protrusions — reaching for a beach cabin door. The figure's body has been transformed into an almost abstract organism, combining human and sculptural qualities. The bright Dinard beach setting contrasts sharply with the unsettling distortion of the body.
Picasso spent summers at Dinard on the Brittany coast in 1928 and 1929, where he painted a series of monumental bather figures. The biomorphic distortions of the body reflect his engagement with Surrealism and his interest in the sculptures of Julio González, with whom he was collaborating at this time.
