About This Work

A large Surrealist meditation on the act of creation, The Studio depicts an artist and a sculpted bust in a spare, geometrically defined interior. The flat, schematic forms and restricted palette of black, white, and grey create an almost diagrammatic quality. The work raises fundamental questions about representation, the relationship between artist and model, and the nature of artistic creation itself.

Painted at the height of Picasso's engagement with Surrealism, this work reflects his friendship with André Breton and the Surrealist circle. The theme of the artist's studio — the space of creation — would recur throughout his career, culminating in the Las Meninas series of 1957.
