About This Work
A tender portrait of Picasso's son Paulo dressed in a Pierrot costume, painted during the Neoclassical period. The work combines the intimacy of a family portrait with the theatrical tradition of the commedia dell'arte. The white costume and soft modeling reflect Picasso's classical influences from his work with the Ballets Russes, while the child's direct gaze gives the painting a touching immediacy.
Paulo Picasso (1921–1975) was Picasso's son with Olga Khokhlova. Picasso painted several portraits of Paulo in theatrical costumes — as Harlequin, as Pierrot — during the happy years of his first marriage. These family portraits are among the most tender works of his entire career.
