A tender family portrait showing Picasso's son Claude drawing at a table while his mother Françoise Gilot and sister Paloma look on. Painted in the year Françoise left Picasso — the only partner ever to leave him — the work has a bittersweet quality. The children's absorption in play and the mother's watchful presence create an image of domestic life that Picasso would soon lose.
Françoise Gilot (born 1921) was Picasso's companion from 1943 to 1953. She left him in 1953 — the only woman ever to leave Picasso voluntarily — and later wrote a memoir, Life with Picasso (1964), that caused a permanent rift. This portrait was painted in the final year of their relationship.
