A bold late portrait of Jacqueline Roque, Picasso's wife and final muse, painted in the year of their marriage. The face is rendered with the characteristic simultaneous profile and frontal view, the features bold and graphic against a flat background. Picasso painted Jacqueline more than any other subject in his career — over 400 portraits.
Picasso and Jacqueline Roque married on March 2, 1961, in a secret civil ceremony in Vallauris. She was 34 years his junior. This portrait, painted in the year of their marriage, shows the bold, graphic style that characterizes his Jacqueline portraits — very different from the rounded, sensual forms of the Marie-Thérèse portraits.
