About This Work
A monumental reclining nude from the most celebrated year of Picasso's Surrealist period. Marie-Thérèse Walter's voluptuous, biomorphic form fills the canvas, the body rendered in warm purples, greens, and yellows. The figure sleeps in a state of complete abandon, her forms merging with the background in a dreamlike dissolution of boundaries.
1932 was Picasso's 'year of wonders' — an extraordinary outpouring of paintings of Marie-Thérèse Walter that are among the most celebrated works of the Surrealist period. The Château de Boisgeloup, where Picasso had set up a sculpture studio, provided the setting for these intimate, luminous canvases.
