About This Work

One of over 27 variations Picasso made on Manet's scandalous 1863 masterpiece, this canvas reimagines the outdoor picnic scene in bold Cubist terms. The figures are fragmented and repositioned, the landscape flattened into planes of green and yellow. Picasso's dialogue with Manet — like his earlier conversations with Velázquez and Delacroix — demonstrates his lifelong engagement with the history of Western painting.

Between 1959 and 1962, Picasso made 27 variations on Manet's Déjeuner sur l'herbe. The series was a sustained meditation on the relationship between tradition and innovation, and on the act of artistic appropriation. Picasso saw himself as part of a continuous tradition of Western painting, in constant dialogue with his predecessors.
