About This Work
The largest and most ambitious of Picasso's 58 variations on Velázquez's Las Meninas, this monumental canvas reimagines the entire composition in Cubist terms. Velázquez himself appears as a towering figure on the left, while the Infanta Margarita and her attendants are fragmented and reconstructed in angular planes of grey, black, and white.
Between August and December 1957, Picasso painted 58 variations on Velázquez's Las Meninas (1656), working in a sealed studio at La Californie. The series is considered one of the most sustained acts of artistic dialogue in history — a 91-painting conversation between two of the greatest painters who ever lived.
