From Picasso's prolific final period, this large canvas depicts a swaggering musketeer — a recurring figure in his last years inspired by Rembrandt, Velázquez, and the Spanish Golden Age. The figure is rendered with bold, gestural brushwork in warm ochres and reds, combining the theatrical bravado of the 17th-century soldier with Picasso's own late-life vitality.
The musketeers of Picasso's final years are widely interpreted as alter egos for the aging artist — swaggering, virile, still commanding. Inspired by Rembrandt's self-portraits as an old man and by the Spanish Golden Age painters he had admired since childhood, these figures assert an undiminished creative and physical presence.
