About This Work
The Vollard Suite is a series of 100 etchings commissioned by the dealer Ambroise Vollard between 1930 and 1937. The Sculptor and His Model plates — of which there are 46 in the suite — are among the most celebrated, depicting a bearded sculptor (a self-portrait of Picasso) in a classical studio with a beautiful model, often identified as Marie-Thérèse Walter. The line work is of extraordinary delicacy and refinement.
The Vollard Suite represents the apex of Picasso's printmaking achievement. The 100 prints were delivered to Vollard in 1937, but he died in 1939 before publishing them. They were eventually acquired by the Bibliothèque nationale de France. Individual prints from the suite are among the most valuable Picasso prints on the market.
