This simple, elegant lithograph of a white dove became one of the most reproduced images of the 20th century after it was adopted as the symbol of the World Peace Congress in Paris in 1949. Picasso drew the dove from a pigeon given to him by Henri Matisse. The image's power lies in its utter simplicity — a few confident lines describing a bird in flight that became a universal symbol of peace.
The Dove of Peace was created at the request of Louis Aragon for the World Peace Congress poster. Picasso, a committed Communist at the time, embraced the commission. The image was subsequently used by peace movements worldwide and remains one of the most recognizable symbols of the 20th century.
