La Toilette depicts two women — one nude, arranging her hair before a mirror; the other clothed, holding the mirror. The composition is one of Picasso's most classical, its simplified forms and warm palette anticipating the Neoclassical works of the 1920s. The relationship between the two women — intimate yet formal — gives the painting a quality of timeless ritual.
Painted in 1906, La Toilette belongs to the transitional period between the Rose Period and the proto-Cubist works of 1906–1907. Picasso was spending the summer at Gósol in the Spanish Pyrenees, and the simplified, archaic forms of the painting reflect his engagement with Iberian sculpture at this time.
