Created in 1922, Classical Head is an arresting portrait painting by Pablo Picasso that presents a young woman shown from the chest up, angled slightly to the left against a background of vertical streaks of fawn brown and tan. Chester Dale amassed one of the finest groupings of twentieth-century French paintings before bequeathing the work to the National Gallery of Art in Washington in 1963. Documented in Christian Zervos's foundational catalogue raisonné, the work stands as a testament to Picasso's mastery of historical reinvention.
