Continuing explorations begun around Les Demoiselles d'Avignon, Three Women presents three standing nudes as heavily faceted, geometric masses. Their bodies and the space around them are pressed into the same dense structure: angular contours, compressed intervals, and earthen reds and greens make the figures feel both monumental and deliberately difficult to separate from their setting. The painting turns the familiar figure group into a test of how volume, rhythm, and space can be rebuilt through planes rather than modeled naturalistically.

Dated 1907–1908, Three Women belongs to Picasso's African / Proto-Cubist period and records a shift from the confrontational force of the preceding figure paintings toward a more sustained structural analysis. The work's emphasis on faceting, repeated figure forms, and the merger of body with ground anticipates questions that would become central to Cubism. The Hermitage Museum identifies the painting as part of its public collection; its scale and oil-on-canvas medium reinforce the work's ambition as a major early-Cubist statement.
